Melinex® films – Properties and converting options

Melinex® films are biaxially oriented polyester films made of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), which impress with their exceptional mechanical and electrical properties. The temperature resistance from -70 °C to 150 °C, coupled with a tensile strength of 150 to 200 MPa, makes this polyester film a preferred material in demanding applications.

The electrical insulation properties with a dielectric strength of up to 180 kV/mm and the high dimensional stability distinguish Melinex® as a premium polyester. We carry various thicknesses and types in our stock.

Crystal clear, white and matte-transparent versions are available as rolls or cut sheets.

Melinex® films, as high-quality biaxially oriented polyester films (BOPET) made of polyethylene terephthalate, are indispensable in numerous industries due to their outstanding properties:

• Pharmaceutical and medical industry: Melinex® films are used in sterile packaging, diagnostic materials and medical applications where hygiene, chemical resistance and material compatibility are top priorities. They are particularly well suited for medical labels, blister packs and as a protective film for medical devices, as they are biocompatible and easy to sterilize. The high transparency and dimensional stability enable precise printing and reliable barrier properties against moisture and gases.
• Electrical industry: Due to their excellent electrical insulation properties and high temperature resistance, Melinex® films are ideal for insulation in transformers, electric motors, cables as well as for flexible printed circuit boards, film keyboards, displays and capacitors.
• Printing industry: Melinex® films serve as highly dimensionally stable carrier films for screen printing, flexographic printing and offset printing. The special print pre-treatment enables excellent printability with solvent-based inks, varnishes and stickers, which makes them particularly suitable for high-quality labels and graphic applications. The films are compatible with various printing processes and offer excellent adhesion and color brilliance.
• Furniture industry: In the furniture industry, Melinex® films are used as protective surface films and decorative films that impress with their scratch resistance and durability.
• Packaging industry: Melinex® films are used in flexible packaging with excellent barrier properties against moisture and chemicals. Their high transparency and dimensional stability make them ideal for food packaging and technical packaging.

Sustainable PCR-based films

Pütz Folien focuses intensively on PCR-based films from various manufacturers and already offers a wide range of functional solutions for various applications. The focus is particularly on PCR film.

Since there is no uniform standard for the production and use of PCR films to date, individual advice is essential, taking into account the specific customer requirements.

The available PCR-based films contain between 30% and 100% post-consumer recycling material (PCR), depending on the manufacturer and type. The range includes both standard films and special products such as white/white foamed, metallized or crystal-clear variants.

Environmental benefits and sustainability of Melinex® films

PCR-based films contribute significantly to reducing the CO₂ footprint, as the use of recycled materials requires less energy and often enables shorter transport routes. The use of PCR material promotes the circular economy and reduces the amount of waste.

The mechanical and optical properties of PCR films are comparable to virgin PET, so no loss of performance is to be expected. Due to their mono-material-based structure, Melinex® films are particularly easy to recycle, as they do not contain any plasticizers, heavy metals or other harmful substances.
